For those of you whose Valentine’s Day didn’t go quite as planned, or for those who are just going through a breakup in general, here’s a playlist for your broken heart. Last week, I made a playlist full of the greatest love songs from a variety of genres. This week, I am flipping sides. I previously mentioned that I am a hopeless romantic and have a great appreciation for love, but I also have a great appreciation for heartbreak. Heartbreak is something we’ve all been through, and it is so necessary. It is essential to our growth. If we never got our hearts broken, we would never realize that we deserve the world. We are all deserving of love, but before we can get it, we have to break first.
This is my broken heart playlist. I broke it down into categories so that you can all find your favorite genre and discover the songs that speak to you. The full playlist is available at the end of the post. I hope you find some new artists to listen to, and a new favorite breakup song.
Enjoy. And just remember, heartbreak doesn’t last forever, and it will all make sense one day.
I am completely fucking broken inside.
I Miss You // Blink 182
Finally, a Blink song. Blink are my all time favorite band, and I Miss You is one of the most iconic breakup songs in existence. It had to top my list. And, everyone knows the words so I fully expect everyone to scream the lyrics at full volume.
Go To Hell // Go Radio
Go Radio are an incredible band, who broke up way too soon. Even still, they have some of the most beautiful songs, and they are incredibly unique in their style and lyricism. Go to Hell is one of my favorite songs of theirs, as it is both sad and angry at the same time. But, I love their whole catalog. Especially Goodnight Moon and Forever My Father. Check them out.
I Hope You’re Miserable // Moose Blood
Moose Blood is another one of my favorite bands from this genre. Their album I’ll Keep You In Mind From Time to Time is amazing from start to finish. I Hope You’re Miserable is one of the most depressing songs on the album, describing heartbreak in a very poetic way.
Miserable at Best // Mayday Parade
Mayday Parade should have most of their catalog on this playlist honestly. I credit Mayday Parade with being one of the most lyrically genius bands in existence. I think they are popular, but not recognized for their lyrical talent. Miserable at Best is another iconic breakup track, but you should also check out Three Cheers for Five Years, and Stay.
I’ve Given Up On You // Real Friends
I’ve Given Up On You is another tragic track. Not to keep repeating the same line, but Real Friends are great lyrically, too. That’s what I love about this genre is that the lyricism is just on a completely different level from other genres. Emotionally, pop punk is so deep and heart wrenching, and that’s why it’s perfect for break up songs.
A Part of Me // Neck Deep
I love Neck Deep because they do a lot of different versions of their own songs and include a lot of featured artists in their remixes. A Part of Me is such a simple and pretty song where Ben Barlow couples his voice with vocalist Laura Whiteside to create a lovely duet.
It’s Over // Seahaven, Don’t Wish // Tonight Alive, Skin & Bones // Marianas Trench, Megan // Bayside, Cutting My Fingers Off // Turnover, I Would Hate You If I Could // Turnover, Flannel // The Cardboard Swords, Remembering Sunday // All Time Low, If It Means a Lot to You // A Day to Remember, Cigarettes and Saints // The Wonder Years, The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot // Brand New, Clairvoyant // The Story So Far, Navy Blue // The Story So Far, My Friends Over You // New Found Glory, If You Wanted a Song Written About You All You Had To Do Was Ask // Mayday Parade, Three Cheers For Five Years // Mayday Parade, Drown // Front Porch Step, Cute Without the E // Taking Back Sunday, Like We Used To // A Rocket to the Moon, Speaking With a Ghost // Citizen, Never Saw It Coming // Tigers Jaw, Our Apartment // Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties, Divorce and the American South // Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties, Sasha // Turnover, Over // Sugarcult, Everything We Had // The Academy Is…, Screaming Infidelities // Dashboard Confessional, All Over You // The Spill Canvas,Hebron // Real Friends, Saying Goodbye // Sugarcult,Seventy Times 7 // Brand New, Thanks For Nothing // Go Radio, Late Nights in my Car // Real Friends, Covet // Basement, Either Way // Sorority Noise, Losing Sleep // The Wildhood, Cherry // Moose Blood, Upside Down // The Story So Far, Your Soft Blood // Sorority Noise, I’m Not Okay, I Promise // My Chemical Romance
You really fucked me up
Broken // THEY
THEY are very melodic and catchy. Broken is a really simple and beautiful duet. Definitely worth the listen. It’s very different from everything else on this playlist.
Remedy // Ali Gatie
I just recently found this song, but I love it. Again, another really catchy and simplistic song, but a great listen. Perfect combination of sad, but savage.
Molly // Lil Dicky and Brenden Urie, Objects in the Mirror // Mac Miller, Missed Calls // Mac Miller, Lucid Dreams // Juice WRLD, I Fall Apart // Post Malone, Another Sad Love Song // Khalid
Your loss, babe.
Memories // Rachelle Maust
I discovered Rachelle Maust on Twitter, where she got her fame by posting videos of her freestyle rapping and singing. I was instantly a huge fan. She is incredible, and this song is a great diss song. Rachelle is great at being bold and a little bit savage.
Thank U, Next // Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande is blowing up this year. Thank U, Next is being called the breakup song of the generation, which is huge. This song is just way too catchy not to like. And, the video is awesome. I love that she combined some of the best chick flicks to create the masterpiece.
I Have Questions // Camila Cabello
If you’re looking for a truly depressing song. This one is for you. It’s a powerful ballad asking all the questions we all have after a breakup.
Featherstone // The Paper Kites
The Paper Kites are so elegant and delicate. If you’re looking for something not necessarily depressing, but not exactly super upbeat, this is for you. It’s calm and beautiful, but still sad.
Perfectly Wrong // Shawn Mendes, Please Don’t Go // Joel Adams, Fade Away // Rebelution, Goodbye My Lover // James Blunt, All I Want // Kodaline, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together // Taylor Swift, Shoutout to My Ex // Little Mix, Heartbeats // Jose Gonzales, Love Yourself // Justin Bieber, Stay With Me // Sam Smith, Let Her Go // Passenger
I hope you end up happy
Either Way // Chris Stapleton
Chris Stapleton is such an incredible artist. Even if you don’t like country, you should give him a listen. Every song is equally as incredible as the last. Either Way is a very heartbreaking story told in a slow and tear provoking tone. Check out literally any song off any of his albums.
Somewhere On a Beach // Dierks Bentley, Make You Miss Me // Sam Hunt, Over You // Miranda Lambert, Drinking Too Much // Sam Hunt, Before He Cheats // Carrie Underwood
Welcome to the lonely hearts club
Fall to Pieces // Velvet Revolver
Fall to Pieces is a song that holds a very special place in my heart. Rock music in general holds a special place in my heart, and I don’t express it as much as I should because I love pop punk more, but this is the time to express my appreciation just a little bit. Scott Weiland will forever be one of the most iconic musicians. I read his memoir, along with his wife’s memoir, and it was so enlightening and intriguing to take a peek into Scott’s life. He wrote Fall to Pieces for his wife Mary, when he realized his struggle with drugs would make him lose her. It’s a very tragic song, but one of my all time favorites.
Snuff // Slipknot, Every Rose Has Its Thorn // Poison, Blurry // Puddle of Mudd, I Remember You // Skid Row
I’ll pretend that I’m alright
Alright, I didn’t highlight any songs in this category because these are breakup bangers. These are the ones everyone knows. So, sing along and heal that broken heart with a little music.
Here Without You // Three Doors Down, Cry Me a River // Justin Timberlake, Fuck You // CeeLo Green, Apologize // One Republic, Say Something // Christina Aguilera, Take a Bow // Rihanna, Irreplaceable // Beyonce, Won’t Go Home Without You // Maroon 5, Back at Your Door // Maroon 5, Wake Up Call// Maroon 5, We Belong Together // Mariah Carey, Someone Like You // Adele, Hit ‘Em Up Style // Blu Cantrell, Fighter // Christina Aguilera
My goal is to continue to grow each playlist as I discover new music, and I want your help. Feel free to send me artists or songs at https://www.instagram.com/maddisenv/.
