The Best of Blink-182

Written by Mad 4 It

For all of the die hard Blink fans out there, HAPPY BLINK MONTH!!

June is the official month of Blink 182 for reasons to be explained in this very post! And, in celebration, I have dedicated an entire post to the best of Blink. Because they totally deserve it. It’s loaded with the best music videos, albums, song lyrics, and so much more.

Blink was formed by Mark Hoppus, Tom Delonge, and Scott Rayner back in 1992 in Southern California. Starting out their career was the album ‘Buddha‘ (1994), and shortly after, ‘Cheshire Cat’ which was released in 1995. Later on, ‘Dude Ranch‘ was released in 1997, and halfway through the tour of this album, they fired Scott as their drummer, and hired on the legendary Travis Barker. And, the rest was history.

Blink 182 became famous for their high-energy shows, their inappropriate humor, and untamed personalities. They immediately blew up in the punk scene, and emerged as the iconic face of the pop punk genre.

June is referred to as ‘Blink Month’ due to the number of album release dates held in the same month. ‘Dude Ranch‘ was released on June 17th, 1997, then ‘Enema of the State‘ on June 1st, 1999, and finally, ‘Take Off Your Pants and Jacket’ on June 12th, 2001.

Enema of the State really launched them into the main stream, and was a huge factor in the success of the band with songs like, ‘All the Small Things’, and ‘What’s My Age Again?,’ two of the most well-known songs in their discography. After the success of Enema, they released ‘Take Off Your Pants and Jacket‘ in 2001, which rated number one in America, with their hits, ‘Rock Show’, ‘First Date’, and ‘Stay Together for the Kids.’

Blink went on hiatus in 2005 due to conflict within the band about creative freedom and the stress of touring. Tom left the band, and Mark and Travis continued working on a side project, +44

The band didn’t reunite until 2008, after Mark and Tom were notified of Travis’ plane crash. Travis was one of only two survivors from the crash, a nearly fatal experience. The band decided it was time they push their issues aside and continue on their legacy as Blink.

Tom left the band permanently in 2015 (to pursue hunting aliens??), and was replaced by Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio. The band is still releasing music with Matt, including the album, ‘California,’ and their latest single, ‘Blame It on my Youth.’

BLINK ALBUMS RATED:

DISCLAIMER: Please remember that this is MY PERSONAL OPINION of the best Blink albums, but let’s be honest they’re all bangers. What’s your favorite album?!

This leads us to talking about my favorite person on the planet, Travis Barker. I freaking LOVE Travis Barker. What I love about Travis is his incredible musicality. I mean, it’s no secret that he’s one of the best drummers in the world, and hearing about his story was so intriguing to me.

Travis has an autobiography, ‘Can I Say: Living Large, Cheating Life, and Drums, Drums, Drums.‘ This book is AMAZING. Please read it, even if you hate reading, I promise you won’t hate this.

The book opens with his plane crash, then rewinds to tell his background in jazz music and his childhood memories. The way he tells his story is awe-ing. Most people don’t recognize his extensive background in music, or his ability to story tell.

Travis inspires me because of his passion and ambition. He knew exactly what he wanted in life, and he didn’t stop until he got it. And, although this sounds like any other musician, his story resonated with me more than anyone else’s did. The way he spoke about playing the drums, and the work he put into becoming the musician he is today thoroughly amazed me. And, the fact that he went through something as traumatic as a plane crash, which destroyed his mind and body, and still got back into the studio after just four months, made me realize that anything is possible, if you want it bad enough.

“I tattooed my body so I couldn’t fall back on anything. I purposely did that so that I couldn’t get another job. I did it so I had to play music.”

Travis Barker

I’ll end the post here, leaving you to explore the rest of Blink history on your own. Pick up a copy of Travis’ book, and go watch every music video they’ve ever made…it’s fun I promise.

Okay so, obviously I’m a MASSIVE Blink fan. But, as a pop-punk fanatic, it would be a crime not to love Blink. And, I’m just sharing my appreciation!

I’ll conclude this post with one last epic music video. The renowned, ‘I Miss You,’ video. Until next time, music junkies.
