Broken hearted? Click here for a playlist that will help you mend that broken heart!
People often ask me why I am drawn to depressing music; why sadness brings me comfort. Well, I think I seek familiarity…or resemblance, maybe. I listen to music to know I’m not alone in what I’m feeling, especially when I am feeling broken or lost. The poetic and somber lyrics seem to mend my heart and clear my head. And lately, I’ve needed the distraction. I, like everyone, am going through a lot, and I have this tornado of thoughts circling in my head constantly. Overthinking makes my heart heavy and my head cloudy, unable to focus on the most simple tasks. And when I’m feeling this way, there is only one type of music that I want to hear, and I put it on repeat until I can’t take it anymore. This playlist is called Fall Apart. I call it this knowing that I am in my darkest moments, but also knowing that by the end of it, I am healing, and I don’t feel so alone. This playlist contains everything from upbeat and apathetic songs to somber and delicate ballads. Some of these songs are despairingly sad, some of them filled with love and hope, but all of them greatly impactful and powerful beyond belief. Enjoy xx
1. La Dispute
“Can I still get into heaven if I kill myself?”
“If I do not miss a part of you, a part of me is dead.”
“Understand that if you’re cold I’ll keep you warm, and besides, there’s so much beauty in a storm.”
“I still remember how it all came back together just to fall apart again.”
“I thought I heard a plane crashing, but now I think it was your passion snapping.”
La Dispute, in my opinion, are one of the most lyrically genius bands in existence. Every song is so intense and poetic, and every time I hear one of their songs I am blown away.
2. Turnover
“As lovers I shattered you, and even though you’ll never see it, picking up the pieces cut my hands up too.”
“I hope you’re alright, and I’m sorry that I wasted your time.”
“Just another dream I had that’s better than my life.”
“I don’t wanna waste away another cell on a memory when you’re just another meaningless lover.”
“I know you’ve probably been exhausted cause I haven’t slept a wink in a week.”
Turnover are another band that has some of the best lyricism in history. They are so elegant and enthralling and truly worth the listen.
3. The Front Bottoms
“With tears in my eyes, I begged you to stay. You said, ‘hey man, I love you, but no fucking way.'”
“Make sure you kiss your knuckles before you punch me in the face.”
“When I am sad, I am sad, but when I’m happy, oh God, I’m happy.”
“You are still here, you are still happy, you are still smiling and laughing. You are still the only thing and everything I need in my life.”
The Front Bottoms are a band that has really simple, but really compelling lyrics. Their songs are brilliant, and so different from anything else I’ve ever heard.
4. Citizen
“And I heard you said one time, that I never even fucking cross your mind, I guess I’ll act like that’s fine, but you should know that you cross mine all the time.”
“I should have crashed the car the night I drove alone.”
“All this time I sit around and think, but there’s nothing to say, and if you want to feel better I’ll stay out of your way. And, I would love to feel alive again, but I guess that can wait.”
I’ve mentioned Citizen before in other posts, and have already credited Mat Kerekes for his lyrical talents, but Citizen deserves recognition as a band. They are passionately angsty and heartbreaking and beautiful, and each song is so well-written.
5. Real Friends
“If you never break you’ll never know how to put yourself back together.”
“I’m not where I should be, I’m not who I could be, but I’m not who I was.”
“I’m stuck here with all the choices I’ve made, and all the chances I was too afraid to take.”
“I’ve been breaking all ten fingers for you, and you won’t even lift one up for me.”
Real Friends are another band where, although I feel like they are a little more simplistic, each song has such impactful lyrics.
6. The Story So Far
“I wish you’d stop running from your problems and run to me instead.”
“Don’t paint me black when I used to be golden.”
“Not broke, just bent.”
“I’m the book you always opened but you never read.”
“This is your life, there’s no way to run from it.”
“Put yourself in my place for just one day, watch all the colors in your spectrum fade grey.”
The Story So Far are a band that I mention a lot, and I won’t spend a lot of time on them in this post, but check out their acoustic songs. I’ve already praised their classic upbeat and intense songs, but their acoustics are beautiful and simplistic, and very unique to their faster paced tracks.
7. Joyce Manor
“Maybe human’s not such a bad thing to be.”
“I hate they way I feel like I’m dying when I’m alone.”
“It’s such a stubborn reminder, one perfect night’s not enough.”
“Don’t say goodbye, say you’re not sure.”
Joyce Manor is another band that I feel like are rather overlooked in comparison to other bands in their genre. They also have amazing lyrics that are extremely relatable.
8. Moose Blood
“I couldn’t tell you that I wanted you, but I wanted to.”
“Let me hold your hand. We can talk about our favorite bands.”
“She’s not mine and she never will be, I’m reminded every day. She’s not mine and it fucking kills me, she won’t look at me that way.”
“I guess back then I loved her, couldn’t bring myself to touch her. She wanted someone else.”
“And she said, ‘I guess you let me down again. I don’t wanna be just friends, don’t want to sleep in the living room.'”
Moose Blood are still one of my favorite bands, although I was not the biggest fan of their newest album. Moose Blood is a band that I feel embraces their identity really well and is truly unique to who they are as musicians.
9. Brand New
“I died for you one time, but never again.”
“If it makes you less sad, I will die by your hand. Hope you find out what you are, I already know what I am.”
“All the tides are married to the moon, all I want is for my heart to be as true.”
“And it hurts to hold on, but it’s missed when it’s gone.”
Brand New are an obvious one for this list if you know the pop punk genre well. They were lyrically brilliant and highly imaginative in everything they’ve created. They are on this list for their lyricism and creativity.
10. Hotel Books
“My lungs hurt from inhaling the past.”
“How can I show love to the world when I don’t believe in it.”
“When you walked away I found a different suitor to take your place, her name was loneliness and she kept me comfortable.”
“I think I’m losing you, but I will never regret choosing you.”
Hotel Books are so beautiful. They remind me a little bit of La Dispute, with a lot of spoken lyricism, but they still remain diverse and have a great mix of slow and delicate tracks and powerful and fast-paced songs in their catalog.
11. Tigers Jaw
“I learned a lot about falling in love when I fell out of love. I learned a lot about being a friend when I was alone.”
“But me, well of course I liked you.”
“Today I needed a break. My friends were up in mountains and I’m drowning in lakes.”
“It’s a cruel world, but it’s cool.”
“This is something I can’t even talk about with friends.”
Tigers Jaw are such an incredible band in this genre, and really embody the pop punk identity. I think their lyrics are a great representation of the emotion of this genre, and are extremely relatable.
12. Defeater
“And I don’t mind if we take our time cause I’m all yours and you’re all mine.”
“What kind of man am I? I swore I’d never leave your side.”
“Hello my dear, it’s so nice to see you here, how long has it been? Oh it feels like years, but I’m sure it’s just been days.”
Defeater are one of those bands that goes from soft and sweet to strong and loud very well. They balance their albums wonderfully by using these two different styles, and lyrically, although sometimes on the simpler side, still very intense.
I am ending the list here, as I have shared with you some of my favorite lyrics from my favorite songs. The full playlist is available on my Spotify account! Check it out and explore the heartache and angst of pop punk, and discover the mind-blowing lyrics that live in these albums.
