Hello music junkies!

Two weeks ago, I attended my first show in San Diego! I saw Mat Kerekes, vocalist of the pop punk band Citizen, at House of Blues San Diego, in the Voodoo Room. It was a really awesome show, and I thought I would just give a super short review of the show!

First of all, the venue is awesome. It’s a super intimate little room in Downtown San Diego. It was great for photos (I wish I had brought my camera), and the overall sound was perfect.

I had never heard of either of the opening acts, Jacob Sigman (who is the keyboard player for Mat’s project), and Jetty Bones. Both were remarkable acts. I actually only caught the last song of Jacob’s, but what I saw was really great! And, he played with Mat, and was the perfect compliment to his solo project. Jetty Bones surprised me with their relatable and impressive lyrics. I really resonated with a few of their songs, which made the experience that much more enjoyable.

I’ve always wanted to see Mat’s solo project live. I’ve seen Citizen I think three times now, and they are always amazing, but I was genuinely excited to hear Mat’s vocals in a more intimate and acoustic setting. He did not disappoint. Every song was incredible. He played quite a few songs off of his new record, which he nailed, and I was really impressed with. It got everyone stoked for the release of his album, which he announced will be in April. He also absolutely killed some of his older tracks, which the crowd loved and joined in on singing. I wish he could have played his whole discography, but hey I guess he had to stop at some point. Either way, I thought the show was incredible. I don’t think it’s possible for Mat to have a disappointing show.

I also wanted to point out a few of the things that really stood out to me at the show. First of all, Mat’s girlfriend is the bass player and he told us that she learned to play just so that she could come on tour with him, and I’m sorry but that is the most adorable thing I’ve ever heard. Also, Mat’s brother is one of the guitar players which is really awesome, and it made the show so much more personal! The whole band was cracking jokes the whole time, which made the show lighthearted and fun. And, I just wanted to recognize the fact that they all stayed after the show to take photos with and talk to all of the fans. I really admire when bands do that because you can tell that they are genuinely appreciative of their fans supporting their music and coming out to the shows. It also takes them off of that celebrity pedestal and reminds us that they are people, just like us. I know Citizen does this a lot with fans too, and it makes me love both projects so much and want to continue supporting them in the future.

Moral of the story, go see Mat Kerekes (and/or Citizen)! And, if you’ve never heard of them, check them out!

That’s all folks! What the next artist you’re seeing live? Tell me on Instagram
