A Day in the Life

Written by Mad 4 It

6:45 am: First alarm of the day goes off; hits snooze once. twice. three times; aching for just another 5, 10, 20 minutes of sleep…

7:00 am: Struggles to open eyes and get out of bed; hits snooze one last time, just five more minutes, please

7:15: Panics because now I only have 20 minutes to get ready for work…why am I the way I am…

Que morning playlist, titled fitting-ly, “Chaos,”

I love supporting my friends in their passions, and my goal is to eventually have all of my musician friends on my playlists! So far, I’ve added KSmooth and Common Souls to the list!

Common Souls, an “alt-r&b” duo from LA, recently won the John Lennon Songwriting contest for their track, ‘Arizona’. I met them through a friend and were blown away by their divine talent, creativity, and down-to-earth personalities. Their performance was captivating. Their music is tranquilizing; Their whole sound just chills you to the core, entrancing you in a state of pure intoxication. Check out their award winning track, Arizona, here! And, follow them on Instagram, @commonsoulsmusic

KSmooth (aka Kevin Ryan) is a self-taught, multi-instrumentalist/songwriter who grew up with an exposure to a wide variety of music. This exposure influenced his very first album, ‘Search for the Illest Wav.’ which captures a vibe-y, light, modern beach-y sound. Looking for beach vibes? KSmooth. Background music while you work your boring (I mean super totally awesome) job? KSmooth. Road trip jams? KSmooth. It really fits all the categories, and is on my morning playlist for it’s serene, yet upbeat ambiance. Check out KSmooth’s album in the playlist above, or click here! And, also check him out on Instagram @kevinryanmusic, if you don’t love his music, you’ll definitely love his personality.

7:30: Attempting to cook a wholesome brekky, throw on a work appropriate outfit (boo, no leggings…life is hard), while putting on a face and combing my hair

7:45: Dammit, late again. *Downs first gallon of coffee* while sprinting to car & Drive to Job #1 while simultaneously hosting a full fledged concert featuring me…

8:00am-1:00pm: Immerse self in business calls and client reviews until I fall asleep in second gallon of coffee (snore)

Que “Am I Punk Rock Yet?” Playlist highlighting all the BEST pop punk artists…The Story So Far, Microwave, Citizen, Movements, La Dispute (Tiger’s Jaw, Marietta, PUP,)…the list goes onnnnn…..28 hours and 37 minutes of music…Baaaaasically, I never get bored.

Titled “Am I Punk Rock Yet,” after the phrase commonly used in pop punk culture, basically referring to pop punk kids trying to look and act a certain way that embodies punk culture. Example: Wears vans. “Am I Punk Rock Yet?”

One of my most listened to bands on this playlist is, PUP (aka Pathetic Use of Potential). PUP a Canadian punk band, just released their new album ‘Morbid Stuff,’ and it is WICKED.

PUP have easily made their way to the number one spot on my ‘Must See Live’ list. What I love most about PUP is their ability to address heavy topics, and do it in a way that results in a powerful message, and a kickass album. Their previous record, ‘The Dream Is Over’ centered around the alarming wreckage of Stefan Babcock’s vocal cords, and the distressingpossibility of the band coming to an end. With that behind him, their newest record, ‘Morbid Stuff,’ encompasses a different horror; mental illness. To sum it up, Stefan wrote this album with the intent to bring awareness to mental health, of course, but to also humanize it. Stefan reiterates the fact that as a society, we are in a great place for mental health. It is being talked about, it is being recognized, and empathized with; but he also considers the fact that mental illness is often viewed (and sometimes used) as a crutch.

“It’s important to remind myself, and other people, that being depressed and being an asshole are not mutually exclusive.”

Stefan Babcock

The album was created not as social defiance, but as social inclusion. PUP want their fans to know that they are not alone; that they do not have to deal with depression or anxiety in an isolated state of mind. They want people to know that they, too, are human. They go through shit, just like everyone else. But, despite the challenges, your hardships don’t define who you are or what you can become. Check out their album, ‘Morbid Stuff,’ here, to experience the brutally honest, hopelessly authentic lyrics of PUP.

1:00pm: Book it to Job #2, aka second concert of the day featuring yours truly (shrugs) Most likely screaming the lyrics to any Blink 182 song #travisbarker

1:30-6pm: Consumes myself in the role of digital marketing unicorn, (that’s right, I am indeed a unicorn.) And, you thought unicorns didn’t exist… hahaha. Inhales another gallon of coffee, ya know, to get the creative juices flowing, simultaneously creating digital marketing masterpieces.

Music is good when it makes you dance, but music is great when it makes you who you are.

6pm: Heading home, at laaassttt, and not-so-shamelessly still bumping my “Am I Punk Rock Yet?” Playlist…bringing out the full blown Mad attitude, (because I low-key have exhausted all brain capacity at this point) and am ready to get home and crash on my (air) mattress…yes, that’s right AIR MATTRESS. #strugglingcreativeproblems

Anytime after 6pm: *To the window, to the wallll! To my comfy bed I crawl, down this big long hall, ahhh sleep sleep sleep!!!* Okay, so clearly, I drink way too much coffee and don’t have nearly enough social interactions during my days lmao. Nevertheless, I continue my evening with nighttime jams from the beloved angelic voiced beings, Kyle Soto and Mat Kerekes.

I used to religiously use Mat Kerekes as my lullaby music, and sometimes still do, but recently have been completely mesmerized by the mysterious, tranquilizing sounds of Kyle Soto in Welcome Cafe and Seahaven.

Que “Lullabies” Playlist:

Kyle FREAKING Soto. Mysterious. Enigmatic. Perplexing. Straight up BEAUTIFUL. Seahaven are a one-of-a-kind band shifting between the harmonious sounds of simple, atmospheric, space dynamics to post-rock punk. Their albums are full of delicate ballads, and dismal punk grooves, never leaving you unsatisfied. And, Welcome Cafe are similar; with a still delicate sense of harmonious ballads, but even more somber than Seahaven, welcoming a darker, ominous vibe. Throw on these bands and you’ll be elated with contentment.

Moral of the story, I start and end my day with music.

Even if your life is a chaotic mess (like mine), it deserves a killer freakin’ discography. Your life doesn’t have to be boring! And, I know how hard it is to get stuck listening to the same artists and genres! Check out my Spotify playlists if you’re looking to change up your routine, or just take a sneak peek into the life of Mad Dog.

Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.
