Hello music junkies!

So, I’v been really slacking on the blog posts lately, and on my long commute in the San Diego traffic during rush hour, I’ve noticed that I tend to listen to the same artists….over and over and over. And, as I thought about it more, I realized that I have yet to talk about majority of said artists.

I found it interesting that these are some of my most played artists, but at the same time, they are ones that I rarely talk about. So….today is the day!

Today you will get an inside look at my daily soundtrack. This definitely changes pretty rapidly, but recently I’ve been stuck in a pretty repetitive rut, and I believe it’s because these albums and artists are just so incredible that it’s hard to not have them on repeat 24/7.

Fidlar is one of those bands that I had always heard about, and kinda listened to once in awhile, but they were never at the top of my list or given much of my attention. I thought they were good, but I liked other bands better. But, that all changed with their recent album, ‘Almost Free’. They totally converted me into a true fan.

Almost Free,‘ is one of THE BEST albums I have ever heard. It has literally every single thing that makes an album great. It is a truly grime-y, grunge-y, rough sounding album with a suprisingly funky and groovy vibe to it. Each song is so profound from the lyricism, to the breakdowns, to just the overall composition.

The lyrics on this album are immensely strong, bold, and even a little savage. It has a total, “fight the power,” feel to it, which I love, as they tackle politics and societal issues with a “Fuck You” attitude. Overall, the album is intensely powerful, and completely genius. You cannot miss out on hearing a single song from this record. My favorite track off the record is ‘Good Times Are Over,’ but genuinely every single song is unbelievable, and honestly ‘Too Real”“Thought. Mouth.”, and “Called You Twice”, have been giving my favorite track a run for its’ money. Don’t skip this album, go check it out right now!

“I fall to a piece. I can feel the heartbreaks in degrees.”

“You’ve gone so far to the left, you ended up on the right. You got so far to the right, you don’t care if you’re right. Are you really feeling guilty about being white?”

“Cry for help. I prefer to get high for help. You know that therapy is so expensive, oh you’re so defensive.”

Suggested tracks: Good times are over, Thought. Mouth., by myself, too real, get off my rock, … and every other song on the album, honestly.

Remo Drive are such a rad band. The overall vibes and their overall personality as a group are such a huge part of what makes them so great. They have kind of a “‘fuck you, but I still care’ type of attitude. Angst-y, self destructive, and incredibly artistic, Remo Drive are one of my favorite bands at the moment. Their album ‘Greatest Hits’ is perfect from start to finish and is another album that you definitely cannot miss.

“You make me want to start smoking cigarettes, so I die slowly.

You make me want to start rolling fat ass blunts ’til I start choking.”

Suggested Tracks: Yer Killin’ Me, Eat Shit, Art School, name brand

Ahh….The Wonder Years. Such a classic pop punk band. I know I’ve talked about Dan Campbell’s solo project, ‘Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties,’ in my previous post covering underrated artists. Check it out here to read more about that project. But, funny enough, I haven’t talked about The Wonder Years, yet. TWY are true pop punk with a unique sound that is upbeat, heartbreaking, but strangely apathetic. You can easily recognize their songs and and are probably screaming the lyrics right along with them. Their newest album starts to stray away from their traditional vibe and gets a little darker, in my opinion, but could be a really interesting direction for them to go in if they stick with this new sound. They are always one of my go to bands when I can’t decide what to listen to, or just want to sing along.

“Well, Jesus Christ, I’m 26, and all the people I’ve graduated with all have kids; all have wives; all have people who care if they come home at night….well, Jesus Christ. Did I fuck up?”

“I came out swingin’ from a South Philly basement. Caked in stale beer and sweat, under half lit fluorescents, and I spent the winter writing songs about getting better. And, if I’m being honest, I’m getting there.”

Suggested tracks: Came out swinging, passing through a screen door, cigarettes and saints, this party sucks

I’m kinda mad at myself for not talking about Superheaven sooner. They are a truly amazing group. Their sound is on the heavier, grungier side. They’re less on upbeat side and take on a melancholy and dark tone. They definitely have rock influence and . I can sense a sort heavier, deeper, revamped grunge type of sound with a modern, soulful vibe.

“I’ve been so sick of flowers on everything. Someone told me I’m crazy, keep it in. Thousands under a dim light, it’s hard to see. Guess it’s just me…oh well…”

Suggested tracks: I’ve been bored, all the pain, next to nothing

Surprise! Not everything I listen to is grunge or punk. When I’m in the mood for a different style of music, I turn to Russ. Russ is an artist that doesn’t get as much recognition as he should, but people recognize a select few of his songs as bangers. His recent album, “Zoo,” takes on a slightly lighter sound in comparison to, “There’s Really a Wolf,” but it keeps his classic, somber, depressive lyricism. I don’t think this album surpasses his previous album, for me personally, but it really is a fantastic album stocked full of amazing songs.

“Haven’t been in love since I was droppin’ mixed tapes. Built up a wall, swear it’s tall, like 6’8. I don’t wanna spend my twenties on the road, to spend my thirties wondering why I’m alone.”

suggested tracks: losin control, begging you, cherry hill, what they want, me you, missin’ you crazy

Keeping with the same genre, another one of my most listened to artists is J. Cole. Although, I’m much more of an old school J. Cole fan than of his newer releases. I do like Kevin’s Heart and KOD, but I’m much more of No Role Modelz and Wet Dreamz kinda girl. 2014 Forest Hills Drive is an album that I put on repeat quite often, especially when I’m sick of my over-played pop punk stuff. Even if you’ve heard J. Cole before, throw it back and put this album on for old times sake.

“I want it bad, and I ain’t never been obsessed before. She wrote a note that said, “have you ever had sex before?”

Suggested tracks: wet dreams, middle child, no role modelz, kevin’s heart, kod

Alright, heading back over to the punk/grunge end of the spectrum I have the band Basement. Basement is a really hard band to categorize because they are definitely heavier than pop punk, but not quite on the same level as hardcore bands. They are sort of in the middle of all of that, which makes them a great listen for anyone in either one of those genres. They have a deep, guitar heavy tone with an intense set of vocals. I love everything about their sound and desperately want to see them live to hear it all in person. Check out their album, “Colourmeinkindness”, without a doubt their best album to date and one that will never cease to amaze me.

“Good heart, and a desire to please. I want a fatal disease. With you, I don’t want to be with you. When I’m with you, I don’t want to be with you.”

Suggested songs: covet, pine, whole, promise everything

Ending my list is, someone who I have talked about a lot, but never fails to deserve the recognition…Mac Miller. I won’t go into depth about him, since I’ve mentioned him in more than one of my previous posts, but my all time favorite Mac songs are: Senior Skip Day, Best Day Ever, Donald Trump, Party on 5th Ave., Loud, Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza, Red Dot Music, Missed Calls, Self Care, Ladders, and Come Back to Earth. I don’t think he has a bad song. RIP Mac.

“Escape the world, escape the stress, and I don’t give a FUCK if the house a mess cause, we gonna handle that later, we gonna handle that later, right now let’s get this paper and smile at all them haters.”

suggested tracks: all of them

And that’s the recap of my current most played artists! I’m sure I’ll make a new most played list in a few months, but until then, enjoy the full playlist below and tell me what your favorite artists are on Instagram
